What You Need to Know about Carrier Oils and Your Skin

May 12, 2017 by spcadmin

With summertime just around the corner, there’s a lot of emphasis on skin and how to keep it healthy while you’re out and about in the sunshine. Applying Young Living essential oils onto your skin can be a great way to strengthen your system and promote internal peace and wellness during these fun and busy months, but it’s important to know how to save your skin from potential damage or irritation with one very important ingredient – carrier oils.

Whether you are new to essential oils or if you have already adopted a few oils into your home and lifestyle, understanding the necessity of carrier oils can benefit everyone to ensure safe and satisfying use!

What is a Carrier Oil?

When we talk about carrier oils on EssentialOils.love, we are referring to Young Living’s V-6 Vegetable Complex or another pure vegetable oil. The most important point to remember about carrier oils is this: while carrier oils help dilute the intensity of essential oils, they do not dilute the powers of essential oils. In fact, all essential oils should be partially diluted with pure carrier oils to receive the best benefits from the oils.

How Carrier Oils Amplify and Protect Your Essential Oils Experience

Young Living’s pure essential oils are never cut with any other ingredients and are always created with the Seed to Seal® guarantee, but introducing oils directly to your skin without a carrier oil can actually do more harm than good. This is referred to as “neat” application, and it can lead to:

  • Skin irritation that can hinder the benefits of essential oils from fully reaching your skin
  • Evaporation of the essential oil from the skin before it is fully absorbed
  • Becoming potentially “sensitized” to the oil, a permanent skin response similar to an allergy that can prevent you from using the oil in the future.

In addition to keeping your skin protected from the strength of the oil, pure vegetable oils contain their own nutrients that can nourish the skin. Carrier oils also ensure that the essential oils are properly massaged into the area.

Looking for a Carrier Oil? Start with Your Kitchen!

While Young Living’s proprietary V-6 Vegetable Complex serves as a great carrier oil for all essential oils, you can find options that are just as good right in your own home!

  • Olive oil: Who doesn’t have a bottle of olive oil in the pantry for cooking or to use in your homemade salad dressing? This common culinary oil can also be a great carrier oil, but be sure to check the ingredients to make sure that there are no contaminants such as similarly-colored oils that are often added into grocery store varieties.
  • Coconut oil:  Made of saturated fat, coconut oil easily absorbs into the skin without leaving a sticky film.

Trending: The Dangers of Essential Oils and Sunlight

May 3, 2017 by spcadmin

Typing “essential oils” into any search engine or social media platform this week may not be for the faint of heart, as one of the most trending topics right now involves chemical burns on the skin from photosensitive essential oils.

The post, which has been shared over 139,000 times on Facebook and has now made the rounds on Buzzfeed and other online news outlets, was meant as a PSA from Elise Nguyen, a woman in Wisconsin who used essential oils to help calm her before yoga class and did not consider the consequences of using a tanning bed right afterward, resulting in horrific burns on her neck and wrists.

Although Elise took responsibility for what happened and the essential oils were not produced by Young Living, there are two very important lessons to take away from her story: 1. If used as directed, essential oils are not harmful, and 2. It is important to use high quality oils, such as those produced with Young Living’s proprietary Seed to Seal® process, to get the best results from your experience with essential oils.

Proper Use of Photosensitive Essentials Oils

In the article, the essential oil that created the reaction was wild orange, which, among other citrus-based oils, can cause photosensitivity to the skin. It is typically recommended to avoid UV contact 12-48 hours after applying the oil to help protect your skin and make sure that your personal experience with essential oils continues to be relaxing and tranquil. When it doubt, remember that each bottle of Young Living essential oils is precisely labeled with these warnings for the continued safety of our community.

Know How Your Skin Reacts to Essential Oils with a “Patch” Test

Know thyself, especially when it comes to putting oils on your skin! Performing a patch test on your skin is a good idea for any oil you are using for the first time. The more you know how your skin reacts to certain oils, the less likely you will be to develop a severe reaction such as the chemical burns experienced by Elise. Don’t let nervousness keep you from incorporating the benefits of essential oils into your life; if you have delicate skin conditions or medications that you are unsure about, consult a physician who is familiar with essential oils before use.

Don’t forget that there are multiple ways to enjoy essential oils besides direct application to the skin. Most oils can also be diffused or applied to a cloth for relaxing inhalation.

Finding the Best Quality Oils with Young Living’s Seed to Seal® Process

If you’re new to essential oils or curious about their benefits, emphasis must also be put on finding high-quality, uncut essential oils for the best results. Young Living oils are created using a proprietary Seed to Seal® process, which is a guarantee that from the hand-selected seeds until the oil reaches the bottle, the blend of Young Living’s modern technology and back-to-basics principles bring the very best to you, every time.

Some other helpful techniques are:

  • Learning how to say “no”
  • Making a habit out of prioritizing your tasks so you don’t become overwhelmed
  • Adapting a positive affirmation that you use to keep yourself empowered throughout the day
  • Learning how to incorporate stress-relieving essential oils into your day, such as rubbing a few drops on the nape of your neck, diffusing oils in your workspace, or applying to a cloth and inhaling directly for portable aromatherapy.
